Deaths in police custody
While working on this investigation, I spent months combing through hundreds of inquests and police watchdog reports. I used public records and access to information requests to support my reporting. Our reporting found dozens of Canadians have died since 2010 after being arrested for public intoxication or similar offences. Finding and speaking to the loved ones of these deceased people, many who fell through the cracks, lifted our reporting and brought the human aspect to our stories.
The Halifax Alehouse
Over the last year and a year, I've been diligent and thorough in my reporting on the Halifax Alehouse. I was tenacious trying to piece together the first story about the bar and its staff and have been devoted to providing as much information and context as this story continued to develop. With my reporting, I was able to develop a rapport with the family of Ryan Sawyer and others connected to violence involving Halifax bar staff. Working on these stories has shown me it's more important to be right than to be first.
